Repair - Reinstall - Restore

Hey Olaf -

If you boot to the YDL CD1 you should get the chance to tab to see
options before the disk image starts to load. From there type:
	linux rescue
from there you should be able to run 'fsck' (see 'man fsck' for details)
on the HDD that shut down uncleanly.

On a reboot, you should be given the option of running 'fsck' if you
shut down uncleanly. It runs by really quickly (kinda like running
interactive startup - you only have a few secs to reply) so it's easy to
miss. This will only happen on the first reboot after a crash, however.

<ReallyRecklessAdvice>
If you can't get the install disk to cooperate with 'linux rescue', you
can hard shutdown your box (eg. unplug it) and reboot, making certain to
run 'fsck' on reboot. If the drive is already fried...

Also, check to see if your atalk or ftp daemons are operational (on the
crashed machine or your remote machine(s). You can transfer critical
files remotely that way if you need to reinstall.

Worst case scenario, you could always email the files to yourself using
a CLI Mail app like mutt. Years ago, when I upgraded from 7.6 to 9.1 I
backed up my files by creating secure compressed archives (with Compact
Pro), then created a buttload of email accounts to hold those files.

g'luck and I won't scold you for not backing up ;)
