Mixed questions about YDL4

Hi Emil

A good place to compare packages is;

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=yellowdog

Also I saw a post on;

http://www.yellowdog-board.com

In the Older hardware section that Sloopy is writing a YDL 4 HOW-TO for
OldWorld machines.

Interestingly, a lot of people see Linux as a good way to make use of older
hardware and I find it rather odd that TSS aren't supporting OldWorld
machines. It's worth noting that TSS state "The following WERE officially
supported through Yellow Dog Linux v3.0 and should function with the current
release if used in conjunction with BootX" on the hardware section of the
site. They also state that it doesn't need the latest to run fast
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/products/why/hardware.shtml

I wouldn't assume that YDL would work 'out the box' on OldWorld machines,
3.0.1 for example wouldn't boot on my 7600 without me updating the kernel to
the OldWorld Benh version (my beige G3 ran fine without a hitch though!).
Similarly YDL 4 will rely on the community to provide support.

Another rather odd issue with YDL and OldWorlds is the lack of any mention
of quik as a boot manager. On old machines hard drives are usually rather
small so having a Mac partition is a terrible waste, Open Firmware prior to
v3 is often dammed as buggy and not worth the effort however my dabbling
with netBSD proves to be quite the opposite. MiBoot is often favoured over
quik but I don't think quik is any more effort to set up.

Perhaps there's a better distro apart from YDL or Mandrake for OldWorld
machines or someone may eventually produce a 'Mac' PPC distro with old
hardware in mind!

Happy waiting!

Julius

Hi

While I can't answer your questions, just know: you aren't alone. I'm a
freshman in college this year, and I really want to get YDL running on my
14" iBook. Right now, I'm a bit disappointed in TSS, because they say YDL 3
supports my new iBook, but it doesn't. So I'm waiting for 4. And it seems
to be a long wait.
