Can't help you there because my PowerBook (a Wallstreet) does not have
eject buttons but rather a motorized eject mechanism.  I found a
kernel patch to support this (cf. http://www.lycestra.com/sys.html and
http://www.lycestra.com/dev/2.4/pcmcia.patch) but I haven't dared to
try it, instead I use MacOS to eject my PCMCIA cards when I need to
(which isn't very often).

Have you tried just doing "cardctl eject" and then pressing the eject
button?
