device-mapper missing from kernel?

I am trying to set up a database server using YDL4.0 on a dual G5 with
two 250GB disks. What I would like to do is use LVM to manage the disk
space in order to have more than 250GB for my database files.

What happens is that the logical volumes devices are not created, the
error is /dev/mapper/control not found, device-mapper not in kernel?

I really need to get this server built and would like to know if this
has a known work around.
