I too am having trouble writing to my HFS partition under YDL 4.0.1. Read is
fine. I'm mounting using a little executable:

#/bin/sh
mount /dev/sdb /mnt/macos -t hfsplus

I read the other posts. I have no related messages in my /var/log/messages.
And the link to the penguinppc site brings up a 404 message. Any
suggestions?

Also, being a newbie, how do I invoke this mount process automatically when
booting into Linux?
