Problems with updated kernel

Ok... the problem is that in 2.6.8, the network drivers were compiled
into the kernel on some machines, now they're modules.
so try modprobe mace or modprobe bmac (I forget what chip your machine
has).
When you find the working module, then edit your /etc/modprobe.conf so
it has a line like this (without the quotes):
"alias eth0 <correct driver from above>"
