Again, well aware of that -- I was saying it never handled driver
partitions properly for CDs. In fact, it used code that would be more
suitable (but not quite) for hard disks.

The patch partition was apparently untouched by Drive Genius aside from
being renamed, but it was one of the first things I considered. Restoring
the patch partition from a known working drive (with dd) had no effect.
