[ydl-gen] Upgrade 4.01 -> 4.1: odd boot behaviour

It *is* related to the initrd - if I boot the YDL 4.1 kernel without it, I  
again get the same message.  Questions:

(1) What must be in the initrd to avoid the missing console?
(2) Why must I have an initrd at all since the upgrade?
