I don't use the GUI for such things, so I can't speak to it.

However, the CD-ROMs are mounted in /media -- usually /media/cdrom or 
/media/cdrecorder.

To actually use the CD, you'll want to run "mount /media/cdrecorder".

To eject a CD from the command line, just type "eject" (and hit enter), 
and the drive should open.  If you want to be more specific, you can 
"eject /dev/cdrom" -- or, if a CD is mounted, you can use "eject 
/media/cdrecorder".

This system is so convenient that I rarely use the GUI for anything 
other than arranging Terminal, Firefox, and Thunderbird windows -- it's 
just too much work to reach for the mouse when most of my real-work is 
done most conveniently on the command-line...  :-)
