Hi Warren,
What does xvinfo indicate?
Also check what driver you're using in your xorg.conf:
gwiz% grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Driver "keyboard"
Driver "mouse"
### Available Driver options are:-
Driver "ati"
If that last line has 'Driver "fbdev"', try changing it to ati
(or perhaps radeon), and restarting your X server.
You can also check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for possible error messages
from the X server.
