INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast

I just installed IDL and was playing with KDE and
Gnome. However, the screen started to get funny,
failing to show the names of the files unless you
clicked on them.

I tried to change the monitor settings (I got a new
IBook), and all of a sudden I couldn't start up YDL.
It started blinking and after some time I had the
message above. Any hints about what's going on, and
how to fix it?
