xfce anyone?

i managed to install YDL 2.3 on my 9600 w/G3 400mhz sonnettech card
in it. it seems to work for the most part. took quite a while to
figure out the ways through the install - wouldn't work in anything
other that text install mode. and kept stopping in themiddle of the
install.

anyway, a couple questions:
on booting there are a couple of fails:
one is depmod, lib/modules/2.2.19lr
(not sure what this module does or why it isn't there or loading)
other is mount:fs type tmpfs not supported by kernel
can anybody explain these things?

ok here's a couple more dumb questions.
the bootx splash lists a few possible kernels: mk, linux_2.2 and LINUX_2.2
uhhh. none of these are 2.3? that's a little confusing. (this install
was form the YDL 2.3 box set of cds)

KDE is sloooowwwww. gnome is slow. (this machine has 1GB of ram!)
sure takes a long time to launch an app or find things. other
linux-oriented friends have suggested xfce, but i cannot figure out
how to get it installed. i have read online pubs and downloaded both
an rpm version and a src, but the rpm won't install due to a missing
lib and i can't seem to figure out how to untar the src file and do
what i will with it. i'm a unix idiot.

as for other things, it does configure the ethernet port easily, no
problem with connection to the router/dsl... ummm... networking to
the other computers served by that router..? this is sounding like
difficulty from everyone else...?
