YDL 2.3 won't recognize iMac modem

I'm running YDL 2.3 on a 233 MHz iMac (Bondi Blue) w/ 160 MB RAM.  It runs just
fine now that I've fiddled with it a bit but I can't make any of the internet
software recognize my modem.  I've tried using the Internet Configuration Wizard
and fiddling with the settings on KPPP but both say that they can't find a
modem.  Is there something I'm doing wrong here or what?  Any help is much
appreciated.
