Umlauts

Hi,
I am wondering where to find German umlauts on an American-English 
keyboard.  On the Mac I got very used to writing on this keyboard and 
using option u - u for ue, option u - o for oe, etc.
Any help would be highly appreciated, the simpler the answer the higher 
the appreciation actually.
Also, is there a spell checker that came with YDL 2.2 that can check a 
whole document like this e-mail e.g.?
