frozen xwindow server

Hello...

I just installed Ximian's Evolution/Gnome desktop environment using 
their graphical installer, but when I was prompted to keep or delete the 
install files, Gnome pretty much locked up. It responds to the f keys 
that operate brightness, etc, but I can't force it to quit and go back 
to the CLI. I'm about ready to do the old hard restart, but I recall 
doing that once before on YDL 2.0 and never getting it to boot up ever 
again.

Can someone help?
