cd drive won't mount

Can anyone help me get my cd drive mounted on my PowerBook (Lombard) 
running YDL 2.2? Both KDE and Gnome report that "/dev/cdrom/ is not a 
valid block device." This happens whether I try to mount thru the GUI, 
or if I run "mount -t /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom/" in a terminal window. Both 
Linux books I own make this sound like a quick, happy process...just 
right click and choose mount! Right...
