default internet device

i have followed all available how-tos to set up Airport on my G4/400 tower
for YDL 2.0.  I know that at least the base station is visible (i can ping
it), but (i believe) applications that use internet services, including
Konquerer, et al, are still attempting to connect to the internet via my
internal modem.
I know that this topic has been discussed like 40 million times one here,
but im just trying to get a finite answer and not be ignored this time...
