gnome not working

hi i've yd 2.3 on a imac firts generation
when i try to start gnome-session i've the following error message:

gtk-warning**:cannot open display
session_manager=local/localhost.localdomain:/tmp/.ice-unix/1297
gtk-warning**:cannot open display

i've tried to reinstall gnome and gtk libs but nothing changed.

what's up?
