Unknown or corrupt filesystem?

I'm installing Yellowdog 2.4 on a blue-and-white MAC G3 by itself (No MAC OS
at all).  I'm using yaboot 1.3.6, and taking all the default options.  yaboot
comes up and autoboots to 'linux', and immediately I get a message:

<long device name> Unknown or corrupt filesystem

What's the story?
