Lowell may be right ... I tried to install Mandrake on an 8600 last
year and it wouldn't take, but when I started checking it out it
appeared it was because Mandrake was looking for an IDE drive to
install on (wouldn't install on SCSI), although I could be wrong. New
World would seem to make more sense ...

Mandrake ran awesome on the G4-400 at the office though.

Anyway, Jason could try on the 6400 since it *does* have an IDE HD
although it's true that YDL is geared to the Mac, indeed *built* for
the Mac.

Mandrake I don't believe has any mailing lists devoted to the Mac.
Even distros such as SuSE and Debian have Mac lists (ie. SuSE-ppc and
Debian-PPC).

That said, I don't know that YDL or Mandrake would be any faster on
a 6400 than OS 9.1, or even 8.6 -- unless you do a limited install
geared to email/web and K-Office or something and make sure you
leave a good chunk of empty HD space.

OS 8.6 with Carbon extensions can run pretty up-to-date software.

My $.02.
