display settings

hey all...i just got a different monitor(samtron 76DF
17") but i've had to reconfigure linux for it...i was
able to change the refresh rate so i can view the
display but my problem is that i cant make the entire
desktop smaller to fit the screen...the monitor
settings on the monitor dont change this..i've looked
at xconfiguration as well but changing the resolutions
dosent seem to make the display(desktop)
smaller...when i move the  mouse up...the rest of the
desktop appears...and when i move the  mouse
down...the panel appears(which is not on autohide for
those of you thinking that).  does anyone know any
solution to this.  any ideas are greatly appreciated...manny
