Palm Pilot on iMac USB port

In gnome and KDE, I've used the Palm Pilot utilities to tell my iMac
that I've got a Palm attached. I created a symbolic link to dev/pilot
from two different ttyUSB numbers (3 and 4, thinking that the keyboard
and mouse take up the first two). When I try a Hotsync, nothing happens.

Is there no way to probe the port and find out what's there? Do I have
to do anything to the device permissions to get it to work?
