local network using ethernet and modem

I've a dialup connection using an external modem. I'd like to allow
other computers to use this connection thru ethernet (builtin over a
ppc9500) , I've followed carrefully the advice given onto the yellowdog
web site. However this don't work here.

Then i wonder if my builtin isn't missconfigured because when i try to
ping another machine over this very small (2 computers) network i get
"host unreachable". I'm sure the harware connection works because i'm
able to connect both computers under AppleTalk either under macos or
linux (ysing netatlk in this case).
