i don't think so tcpip panel gives ip address no MAC address, anyway
i'll verify.

but this is no more a prob of MAC or driver to me, because when i try to
telnet or ping one machine by another and vice-versa i see the leds on
my hub blincking. Also when connected by ppp0 to the outside net i "see"
packets going from lo to eth0.

when i say "i see" it means that using grellm (a dockapp for blackbox
--> slit) i see the activity of various disks, cpu, eth0, lo and ppp0.
(for that point of vue gkrellm is a must have...)

and also appletalk is working between linux <--> macos, both sides :
this implies hardware and driver are OK because on the macos side (macos
8.6) i know AppleTalk is over tcp/ip ...
