Just out of curiosity, have you checked Apple's support pages for any
firmware updates for your machine? Just a thought.

I've found one other CD I can't boot from: Apple's Hardware Test CD.
I can boot from the OS 9 installation, OS 9 Software Restore, OS X
Install and Norton System Works CDs. I can't boot from the YDL 2.3
install or Apple's Hardware Test CDs. Does this shed light on any
more possibilities?

Does anyone from Terra Soft Solutions monitor this list? I could
really use some help.

Thanks for your time.

I'm new to this list (and to YDL - and to Macs - and to ... :). Here
is the text of a message I sent to comp.os.linux.ppc 3 days ago, and
have not received a response. So, I'm turning to you folks. HELP! :)

********** BEGIN MESSAGE **********

Howdy,

This is getting frustrating! I tried about a month ago to install YDL

2.3, but I couldn't get my Mac to boot from the CD. I was running Mac

OS 9.1 then, and tried creating the disc from YDL's dayton ISO image.
I

used Easy CD Creator on a PC, Toast on my Mac, I tried FTPing the
image

(using Fetch) with various binary modes, and a myriad other contorted

combinations. When attempting to boot (holding "C" to boot from the
CD)

all I ever see is a blank screen. I gave up, thinking that all the
boot

CDs I created were somehow screwed. I vowed to wait for Jaguar.

Well, I'm running Jaguar now. I re-downladed the dayton ISO disc
image

from YDL using the shell's ftp (with which I'm a lot more familiar),
and

used Jaguar's native Disk Copy to burn the CD. Everything seemded to
go

perfectly. However, my hopes that I finally had the problem licked
were

dashed when I was greeted, once again, by nothing but a blank screen.

I hear the CD spinning, I hear a little HD activity, but ultimately -

nothing. This has got me wondering: I've got a 466 MHz PowerMac G4

with a 15" Studio display. Is there anything "special" about the

display? (Being a recent "switcher," the connector sure doesn't look

standard to me.) Could it really be booting in some sort of plain

vanilla text mode that my display just isn't understanding? Has
anybody

else successfully installed YDL 2.3 on a PowerMac G4 with a Studio

display?

I'm grapsing at straws here. Any pointers would be *greatly*

appreciated. Thanks for your time.

A little more info - I've got a 30 GB HD that I partitioned as 10M
unallocated (for YDL), 10M HFS+ (for OS 9) and 10M HFS+ (for OS X). I
have both OS 9.2.2 and 10.2 installed.

Tonight I broke down and went to a reseller and *bought* YDL 2.3.
Guess what? Blank screen - no boot. I even tried holding the
<<CMD><<OPT>PR and let the system "bong" four times before trying
again by holding the "C" key. (Not sure what that does, but it was
suggested to me.) As an aside, another strange thing happened - after
giving up [yet again :( ], I went to boot from my HD. Instead of
getting a smiley Mac face (just love those technical terms :) I got an
icon of a floppy with a blinking question mark for a few seconds -
*then* a smiley Mac - *then* it booted into OS 9.2.2! OS X *had* been
my startup disk. What's up with that?

Anyway, I have successfully booted from the OS 9 and OS X install CDs
and from the Norton SystemWorks CD - so, I know there's no problem
with the "boot from CD" procedure. But, where do I go from here? How
do I troubleshoot something that doesn't even boot?!

Any and all help, suggestions, pointers, comments, critiques or dope
slaps welcome. Thank you for your time. Take care and God bless.
