Trouble installing 3.0

I tried to install 3.0 about 10x already and the only successful time 
was when I selected only X Windows but that's hardly a GUI for a newbie 
like me.  I've tried to install both GNOME and KDE, both together and 
separately but the install will freeze all the time when it tries to 
install KDE's utils rpm file and some other file from GNOME.  Can 
anyone explain this?  My Mac is a Ti Powerbook (2002).  Any help would 
be appreciated.  Thanks!
