Where are my floppy and Zip

I have installed YDL 2.3 on my beige G3 Mac (OldWorld). The install
onto a 2nd 6 GB drive, 4 GB for Linux, was uneventful all 4 times I
tried it. The Mac itself has a floppy, internal Zip and cdrom. I have
an external SCSI chain of devices (scanner, Jaz, and another Zip)
attached. All work fine as Mac periferals. My printer works with my
Mac running OS8.6.
The mystery begins with,
cat /etc/fstab
The response shows no floppy(fd0), but 2 Zips (zip100.0 and zip100.1)
and my cdrom. If I put in a cdrom, I can see it and its contents. But
if I put a Zip or floppy into any drive and do an
eject fd0, or eject /mnt/zip100.n (n=0,1)
the drive will eject the media, as it should. Something in the system
recognizes these names well enough to eject correctly.
In the case of the Zips, I can mount the device, store a simple file to
it (mount, then cd, then touch fname, then cat >> fname) and all goes
well. But after I eject the disk, I can still cd to something that I
thought was the disk (/mnt/zip100.n). I can ls to see the file I just
made, and cat to read it. That is, even with the disk removed, I can
still see the file structure and its contents, the file I just made.
This would seem to indicate that the file and file structure leads to
somewhere other than the actual disk, despite what my "eject" would imply.
Similarly, since the floppy is not in /etc/fstab so I can't cd to it or
anything else. But after I shove it into the drive, I can "eject fd0"
to get it back out. Something knows enough about fd0 to eject it, but
not enough to see it in any file structure.
I cant find any extraneous names in my fstab or mtab that might be
unexpected names for my drives. So my question is, where are my drives,
what are their names, how do I address them?
I cant print either, but one problem at a time.
Thanks
