Below are some snipets from emails I received setting up my printer on
YDL 2.3. I found CUPS to be useless after about 3 days of trying to set
it up:

I also recommend you to carefully read this web site:

http://www.giub.unibe.ch/%7Eeugster/appleprint.html

What you need to change the name of an Appletalk Printer is an utitity
by Apple called "Apple Printer Utility". You can download it here:

http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2296-883080.html?tag=list

PS this is an utility to use under Classic MacOS

I am able to print a postscript file just fine using:

[joev@localhost joev]$ /usr/bin/pap -p 4MP :LaserWriter@* /home/joev/test.ps

my printcap looks like:

lp|4MP:\
        :lp=/dev/atalk/lp:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lp:\
        :px#3060:py#3960:sh:sf:rw:\
        :lf=/var/tmp/lpd-errs:\
        :if=/usr/lib/atalk/filters/ifpap:\
        :tf=/usr/lib/atalk/filters/tfpap:\
        :df=/usr/lib/atalk/filters/dfpap:\
        :of=/usr/lib/atalk/filters/ofpap:

and .paprc:

"4MP":LaserWriter

After reading the howto and downloading the printer utility I was able
to change my printer's name and print a postscript file.

Hope this helps. If the link for the printer utility is no longer any
good, I think I may have saved it on my HD.
