no sound in 9.1 after YDL 3.0

Hello,
I recently wiped my iBook (clamshell) HD for a YDL 3.0 install. Then I
learned how to setup for a dual-boot and wiped again, intending to
install 9.1 and then YDL 3.0 again. The new install of 9.1 has no sound
at all - adjusting mute and volume settings does nothing. I don't even
get the opening chime any more when starting up. Has anyone come accross
this and managed to restore sound to the 9.1 install?
