Is it worth it?

I have triple boot - YDL, OS 9, OS X - and while I used OS X for a
couple of months (I like to be fluent in many OSs) I find Linux to be
far faster.

I followed the real video on the YDL site for guidance to set up triple
boot - I have Linux, OS 9 and OS X in separate partitions.

OS 9 of course suffers from the occasional lockup and disk corruption.
OS X suffers from sluggish performance and the "beach ball of death"
where, okay, technically it isn't locked up, but it sits there for ever
with the spinning beach ball. It is also *much* harder to configure and
install open source software on OS X, in spite of the FINK project,
which helps a lot.

Honestly, when I switch back to OS X (to play Quicktime for example) I'm
taken aback when I get the spinning beachball - I'm so used to the
lightning response of Linux that I've forgotten what it is like ;-)

This is on a PowerBook G4 550 MHz with 512 MB RAM.

I've found YDL to be extremely stable and very fast. OS X is pretty
stable (I've had a few actual lockups or kernel panics). OS 9 is...a
relic, but cute.

My only complaint about YDL is the lack of browser plugins (like Flash)
and limited selection of rpms compared to x86 distros like Mandrake.
However, having said that - rpmfind.net is your friend, and you can
usually compile from source.

By the way, I'm also using WindowMaker instead of Gnome or KDE (they're
installed, of course), which is very nice looking and quick.

Regards,

Fred
