Display settings changed and will not fix

I have same machine, and same problem. My solution: log in as root, go 
to /etc/X11 directory: there you'll find the XF86Config file. open it 
and set 15 as default depth. then save it. log out and in again.
The display setting control panel will continue to say you have 256 
colors, but it's actually not the case, you'll have thousends.
