3.0 cdrom

I just installed 3.0 on  a 500mhz iMac and it works great.  However, the cdrom icon is missing and I can't play audio cds when I try and  mount them.  I think there was an error when I first booted up because there is a hiss coming out of the speakers unless i turn the cdrom level down on the sound mixer.  Any suggestions?
