2.3 install blank out at outset

Yes, that's the problem. I can't partition using 
the CDs I got with the laptop, because I managed
to damage them in transit. I was hoping there'd be
some
tool on the install CD that might first try to do
this. 

But clearly not. I'll try to find some Mac CDs to 
partition it.
