monitor settings for ydl 2.3

hi all,

i've installed ydl 2.3 plus OS X on an ibook bought in
november 2002.  i followed the manual in choosing a
resolution of 800x600, and a color depth of "16 bits
for thousands of colors". 

however, when i start the computer (non graphical
login), and boot into linux, there's a jitter/shimmer
on the screen when the setup begins.  then, after
logging in, once i do startx, i see the kde desktop,
but  it has a jitter, and it shows everything in
double, with a slight sideways displacement. also, the
control bar at the bottom is not at the bottom but
somewhat higher. 

another thing is that on startup the screen goes dark,
but (following someone's suggestion on this list) when
i press the dim button, it gets bright enough to be
visible (the text on the screen). when i press the
"brighter" button, it gets dimmer... is this related
to my main problem?

how do i fix the jitter (and why is it happening)?
