Intro to Linux

I've had a few problems using Linux on my iBook so far, but this list hasn't been of much help. The problem is that I am not at all familiar with Linux, and have no idea how to really work with it. I can figure out Gnome or KDE marginally well, but the simple things like mounting CDs or connecting to the internet are still out of my league.

Most advice I've received on this list included strings of "command line" text input (or, that DOS-like way of making the computer function, in case this is the wrong term to use), and I have no idea what the syntax is, or what to even look for, so these have been of little help.

I'm quite certain that this type of material won't be hard for me to pick up on, as long as I can get a start somewhere. Can anybody recommend some good textbooks or website tutorials to show a newbie how to start working in-depth with Linux?

Much appreciated, and I'm sure other new users will also make the best of it. Thanks.
