Install on one Mac, use on another?

Suppose I have an external SCSI drive hooked to an 8600 and install YDL 
there.  Would I be able to move the drive to a 7200 and use Linux 
there, or would it get confused by the hardware differences between the 
two machines?

In case you wonder why I would want to do that:  I have had no luck 
installing on the 7200.  Every time I try, the install fails at a 
different place, so I think it might be that the CD-ROM drive is flaky.
