Gnome Themes

I figured out that the window manager in Gnome is Metacity.  So I
downloaded several Metacity themes.  Whenever I try to install them
though, it rarely works.  I've only been successful with two out of
twelve or so I've downloaded. I leave them tarballed and install them
through the theme manager that comes with Gnome.

I've looked inside the .themes directory and I see the ones I've
installed, even the ones I didn't think installed correctly.  How come I
can't see them in the theme manager?

Also, I installed Sawfish, but don't know how to get it running instead
of Metacity.
