Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root

I have been trying for several days to install YDL 3.0 on my G3 Beige tower.
I tried several different ways and get the same error everytime. Both using
OS 8.6 and OS 9.2 using BootX
Goes through the installer fine, I used the automatic partitioning which
shows the root partition, swap, usr, home don't see a boot partition...
do I need to add that to the list?

Where it fails is when it gets to:

adb: starting probe task...
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdax or 08:09
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:09

What could be the problem? I installed 2.0 which mostly worked... at least I
was able to get to a command line.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

New to it all
Thanks for any help
