Can't get java sdk to work.

Hello. I've searched all over the internet on how to set the java path. I found some info but no matter what I try I can't get java working. I tried 'export PATH=/usr/j2sdk1.3.1/bin:$PATH and what not but when I enter java -version it says java: command not found. I've only gotten the plugin to work but nothing else. Thanks in advance.
