Netz:

In YDL 3.0, if you want to install a lot of good extra programs, you'll
get better results if you customize the package installation and choose
the "Everything" option. Sure, it's about a 5GB install, but if you have
room for it, it's worth it. If you don't install all the packages,
you'll run into problems trying to install multimedia packages.

There are no good sound or video applications included with YDL 3.0, at
least in my opinion. You'll need to get them later. The best player for
DVDs and CD audio is Xine. There are some good chat programs included
with the YDL installation, such as Gaim. I believe it's a multi-protocol
client like Fire. With the full install of YDL, you'll get the Galeon
web browser for the Gnome environment. It is perhaps the most like
Camino and Safari.

To add any extra applications, the easiest way to do so is to log in as
root and open a text editor. Open the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add
the following to the end of the file:

# freshrpms
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net yellowdog/3.0/ppc freshrpms
rpm-src http://ayo.freshrpms.net yellowdog/3.0/ppc freshrpms

Save the file. Then open a terminal and type the following:

apt-get update && apt-get install synaptic -f

This will install a very amazing front-end tool for managing RPMs. Once
you have installed the Synaptic package, you can log out and log back in
as user. Then go to System Settings > Synaptic. All the packages will be
nicely grouped into categories with detailed descriptions. Find Xine in
the list and click the Install button, then the Proceed button--within a
couple of minutes you'll have an application that puts iTunes to shame
(you'll still need to use another application like Grip or KAudioCreator
to rip or encode CD audio). XMMS, which is included with YDL, is
probably the best choice for playing back MP3's. There is even an AAC
plug-in available for it in case you've converted all your songs using
iTunes 4.
