MOL thousands of colors in X-mode

I mentioned this in a previous mail, but it probably got lost under all
the... erm, other stuff. Is there a way to make MOL display more than
256 colors when displayed in a X11 window while still having only
thousands of colors in YDL? Currently if I switch to thousands of colors
inside MOL, all I get is really twisted colors.
Obviously I could just run MOL in console-mode, but sometimes it would
be nice to have the Gnome desktop (+ panel etc) visible.
