YDL on XServe 2003

Hello all
I've been trying to install YDL 3.0 on a brand new XServe. The installer
fails to see the hard drives. After investigating, I found the following
document:

It describes kernel and yaboot recompilation on Debian for PPC in order
to get the IDE drives to work. 

I was wondering if somebody has performed a similar maneuver on a 2003
Xserve using YDL 3.0. Any pointers will be very appreciated.

For the record, the 2003 XServe is as of now, officially unsupported for
YDL.
