Matt, I've tried two installs.  It seems to be some issue with the iMac DV's
ATI Rage 128 graphics system.  
(Might it be different from other iMacs'?)  The solution, as I was told was
to use the generic VESA driver, 
but I haven't had enough time to try this myself, as trying to change the X
configuration with the 
configuration tool rendered X totally non-functional.  Possibly you will
have a better experience if you 
install, but use the VESA/VGA drivers instead of the ATI Rage 128.

Hope you get your iMac working.  I had 32 of them that we were considering
for Linux workstations, but 
we can't have much downtime on even one machine.
