Deleting stuborn trash items

How do you go about deleting items in the trash that don't want to be
deleted?  These are folders on my desktop that were in the process of
doing ./configure.  I have since downloaded newer versions and never got
to the make part.  I just want to be able to delete these and need to
know how to do this.  Can I use the console to empty the trash as a su? 
Below is one of the errors I am getting while trying to empty the trash.
