I have a suspicion that it's 9.0.x which is the problem. I think that 
OS X now requires at least 9.1 and won't allow 9.0.4. I forget when 
this changed (Jaguar, maybe?) but I do remember seeing a discussion on 
the topic.

Can you borrow 9.1 from someone?
