kppp - no carrier - need help

total newbie to linux and YDL, have used os X for some time now
and puters for years
all is familiar to me, but i cant get kppp to work.
ive seen others struggling too, but not too many...
ive read the manual, and searched around quite a bit, on both KDEs and 
YDLs sites
and other places

if theres an old thread ive missed,  id be very happy for a pointer, or 
for any other info at all,
concerning kppp dial up

my other machines, os x and 9, connects flawlessly

BTW, does the network settings in 9 in any way mean anything for any 
kind of networking in YDL?

YDL 3 (sirius)
on performa 6400, us robotics 28800

everything else seem to work ok, allthough its slow.........
