Having same problem with yum

I am having the same problem with yum.  My problem is usually when it gets to 
kdelibs which it will still show it is doing some thing, but you can tell the 
modem has stopped downloading.  If I connect to the internet the modem will 
pick up again, but as soon as I stop that application the modem will go dead 
again.  I have my modem disconnect after 15 minutes of inactivity.  It was 
suggested that I try a mirror site which I have tried and I have the same 
problem.  It seems that some have no problems while others are having 
problems.  apt-get will not work as these updates are not available on 
apt-get.  I was told by some support people at yellowdoglinux that apt-get 
would not be updated as they were only going to update yum.  Hopefully some 
one can suggest some thing so both of us can get these updates.
