dial up and ppp0

Help

First I was trying to set a sandard modem and dial up connection but 
couldn't get it set up to do anything. I would run through the wizard, 
and it would stall or say that it was active but I could never get on 
the net. Then I set the pp0 to auto activate on start up, now my machine 
stalls during the boot process as the ppp0 and  goes no further.

Please help. I'd like to get this working, I have yet to have a 
successful day in the Linux environment.
