This doesn't seem to be true. Connecting the USB txmitter to my 
wife's original iBook (OS 9.2) did not work. The combo came with an 
installation disk which installed a couple of preference control 
panels for OS 10.2 and I guess some kind of driver (the disk also had 
an OS 9 installation).

Did your SVGA video-out work?
