how to format my external drive?

Good lord, why didn't I see that before? Anyway... it let me erase the
disk as MS-DOS, but won't mount the disk to the desktop, and won't allow
me to give it a partition unless I change the format again -- MS-DOS
isn't an option under the Partition tab, you can only do that in Erase.
When I go back to Linux with the disk erased as MS-DOS, pdisk tells me
there is no longer any /dev/sda device. I'm going to do more googling
and try to figure it out, will post back if I get any further. :-)
